If you're staying in the south, the Los Cristianos kayak trip is the most convenient: four time slots, a child rate and snorkelling below Montaña de Guaza. If you're staying in the west or you're there for the scenery, Los Gigantes wins for its cliffs and its support boat, although there's only one trip a day and it doesn't forgive late arrivals. Either way, book for the paddle and the snorkelling: dolphins, if they swim by, are a bonus, not the product.

Los Cristianos or Los Gigantes: the two kayak routes
Los Cristianos → Guaza cliffs → Palm-Mar
You set off from the beach at Los Cristianos and paddle south, hugging Montaña de Guaza, towards Palm-Mar. The trip lasts about two hours: an hour and a half paddling and half an hour snorkelling. There are four departures a day, at 10:00, 11:30, 12:30 and 14:30, so it's easy to fit into any plan. The kayaks take two adults and a child; under-10s ride in an adult's kayak.
It's green turtle territory, but the seller describes them as "likely but never guaranteed" and doesn't refund you if none appear. More on what you'll see underwater in snorkelling and turtles.
Los Gigantes: beneath the cliffs
Teno Activo leaves from the marina at Los Gigantes with its "Kayak + Snorkel Los Gigantes": two hours, low difficulty, self-bailing double kayaks and a support boat that stays with the group. There's just one departure, at 10:30, meeting at 10:15 at post number 6 in the marina. The office is at Calle Poblado Marinero 20, opposite pontoon 6, and they'll look after your bags there.

Dolphins and turtles from a kayak: what's legal
Lots of people search for "kayaking with dolphins". It's worth knowing that a kayak is bound by the same rules as a boat: it may not come within 60 m of a whale or dolphin and getting into the water with them is banned. A kayak trip can't go out looking for dolphins; if they pass nearby, you watch them and keep paddling. The Los Cristianos seller says they "pass by regularly", with no guarantee.
The same goes for turtles: no touching, no chasing and no feeding. Feeding is banned in the Teno-Rasca marine protected area, which runs along the west and south-west coast from Buenavista del Norte to Arona, and the technical report on the green turtle in the Canaries names kayakers among those harassing them in Tenerife. If you really want to see whales and dolphins, book a whale and dolphin watching boat.
Punta de Teno: road closed for works
If a kayak trip asks you to meet at Punta de Teno, on the north-western tip, bear in mind that from 19 January until the works are finished you can't get there by private car, on foot or by bike along the TF-445, any day of the week. Only TITSA bus 369 from Buenavista bus station (about 20 minutes, special €1 fare, cash or card), taxis and authorised vehicles are allowed in. No end date has been published: check on the Buenavista del Norte council website.
Getting there and parking
- Los Cristianos: TITSA lines 467, 470, 471 and 473. The trip leaves from the town beach.
- Los Gigantes: lines 473 (from Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje) and 477 (direct from Costa Adeje). If you drive, parking inside the harbour is pay-and-display; outside there are free spaces if you arrive early.

Who it suits and who should think twice
It works well for families with children from 6 (little ones share with an adult), couples and anyone of average fitness. Teno Activo rates it as low difficulty and has a support boat, which is reassuring if you don't paddle much. More ideas in Tenerife with kids.
Think twice if you easily feel queasy sitting on the water or if you want something calmer: a boat trip with a swim stop takes you along the same coast without paddling. If it's the seabed that interests you, diving gives you more time down there.
The operators don't publish a weight limit per kayak; if that's a concern for you, ask when you book.

Practical tips
- Bring swimwear and sun cream; water shoes are optional.
- The water is 19–20 °C from February to April: you'll be glad of the wetsuit, which is included in Los Cristianos. In September and October it's around 24 °C.
- Don't pay extra to "see dolphins": you can't legally go looking for them from a kayak.
- Allow for the journey if you're heading to Los Gigantes from the south: there's one departure and 15 minutes' leeway.
How much does kayaking cost in Tenerife?
Between €36 and €45 per adult at direct prices, with snorkelling included. In Los Cristianos, children aged 6 to 11 pay €22.50 with Club Canary, and a private trip costs from €300.
Where can you go kayaking in Tenerife?
The two main routes are Los Cristianos towards Palm-Mar, below Montaña de Guaza, and the cliffs of Los Gigantes. Both include a snorkelling stop.
Will I see dolphins kayaking in Tenerife?
Sometimes they pass by, but it isn't guaranteed and a trip can't go out looking for them: the law bans coming within 60 m and getting into the water with them.
Can children go kayaking?
Yes, from age 6 on the Los Cristianos trips. Under-10s share a kayak with an adult.
Do I need experience to go kayaking in Tenerife?
No. The trips are guided and the Los Gigantes one is rated low difficulty, with a support boat.
What happens if I'm late for the Los Gigantes trip?
If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, Teno Activo treats it as a no-show and doesn't refund you. The meeting time is 10:15 at the marina.
