You don't need an €85 tour to get to grips with Tenerife wine. The Casa del Vino in El Sauzal is free, with a museum and a tasting room where €16 gets you three of the island's wines, and Bodegas Monje is a few minutes away, with guided tours three times a day. The problem is distance: from Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos it's 75–85 km, so you'll want a car or an excursion with transport.
For food, the rule is simple: papas arrugadas (wrinkly potatoes) with mojo, grilled cheese, rabbit in salmorejo and a proper guachinche, which isn't just any rustic bar. And if you're staying in the south, the banana plantation at Las Galletas is the easy visit, as long as you get there before 11:45.

Tenerife's wines: five DOs on one island
Tenerife has five denominaciones de origen (DOs) of its own, plus the DOP Islas Canarias, which has covered the whole archipelago since 2011:
- Tacoronte-Acentejo, the first in the Canaries to gain the status (1992).
- Valle de La Orotava (1995), famous for the cordón trenzado, the braided vines you'll see in the valley.
- Ycoden-Daute-Isora.
- Abona, the southern one, home to Bodegas Reverón (Vilaflor).
- Valle de Güímar (1994).
The grapes you'll hear about at any tasting are listán negro for reds and listán blanco for whites, plus negramoll, tintilla, malvasía and marmajuelo. More information at vinosdetenerife.es.
Casa del Vino in El Sauzal: free, with tastings from €16
The Casa del Vino de Tenerife occupies a 17th-century country estate at Calle San Simón 49, El Sauzal (El Sauzal / La Baranda exit on the TF-5), with its own car park. It's run by the Fundación Canaria Tenerife Rural and entry is free: a wine museum, a honey visitor centre, an agro-biodiversity centre, the chapel of San Simón, a garden of vine varieties, a shop with more than 300 wines, a tasting room and a restaurant.
| Tasting in the tasting room | What's included | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Malvasía | 3 wines + 3 nibbles | €16 |
| Marmajuelo | 4 wines + 5 nibbles | €20 |
| Listán negro | 5 wines + 7 nibbles | €30 |
There's a children's version of the tasting. Opening hours for the shop, tastings and museums: Tuesdays, Sundays and public holidays 10:00 to 17:00; Wednesday to Saturday 10:00 to 20:00; closed on Mondays. The restaurant opens Tuesday to Sunday and is also closed on Mondays. Check the times at casadelvinotenerife.com.
| Platform | Product | Rating | Price | Where to book |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GetYourGuide | Tenerife: Wine Museum Ticket with Local Wines & Food Tasting | 4.6 (464) | €16 | See on GetYourGuide |
| Tiqets | Museo del Vino de Tenerife: Visit and Tasting | 4.4 (14) | €16 | See on Tiqets |
Adult prices checked on 2 October 2026. They can change with the date; each platform confirms the final price.
GetYourGuide and Tiqets sell entry with a tasting for €16, the same as the Malvasía tasting in the tasting room, and the museum itself is free. Booking on a platform gets you a fixed visit and, on GetYourGuide, generally free cancellation up to 24 h ahead; on Tiqets check the cancellation section of the listing. If you're going under your own steam and you like wine, the €20 or €30 tasting in the room gives you more wines for not much more.
Wineries you can visit: Monje, Reverón and Ferrera
Bodegas Monje (El Sauzal)
Camino Cruz de Leandro 36, El Sauzal. Guided tours every day at 11:00, 13:00 and 16:00; winery and shop 10:00 to 19:00. The restaurant opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 and is closed on Mondays and throughout August.
| Guided tour + tasting | Price |
|---|---|
| 1 wine + 1 canapé | €14 |
| 2 wines + 2 canapés | €18 |
| 3 wines + 3 canapés | €22 |
| 2 sweet wines + 2 chocolates | €19 |
| 4 wines + 4 Canarian cheeses | €35 |
| Vineyard + winery + 4×4 tasting | €46 |
The €14 option already includes the guided tour, and it's exactly what Tiqets sells for €14. Booking on the platform doesn't save you money: it gets you a fixed time and its cancellation terms, which are worth reading on the listing.
Bodegas Reverón (Vilaflor, DO Abona)
The southern option, on the way to Teide: a tour with a tasting of 4 wines and a snack for about €20 per adult, €7.50 up to age 16 and free for under-5s (reseller price; confirm it with the winery).
Bodegas Ferrera (Arafo, DO Valle de Güímar)
A walking tour with four wines paired with tapas, sold on the platforms for about €65. It's the most expensive of the three.
Guachinches: what they really are
A guachinche isn't just any rustic restaurant. It's a legal category (Decree 83/2013): a temporary place where a winegrower sells wine from their own harvest, under these conditions:
- It opens for no more than four months a year and closes when the wine runs out.
- It serves a maximum of three cooked dishes, plus pickles, nuts and local fruit.
- Only house drinks: its own wine and water.
You'll find them mainly in the north, in wine-growing municipalities such as Santa Úrsula, which has one of the biggest concentrations. Each one opens for a few months and shuts when its wine runs out, so ask where you're staying which ones are open that week.
What to eat in Tenerife: dishes to try
- Papas arrugadas: small potatoes boiled in very salty water, with mojo verde (coriander) and mojo rojo or picón (red pepper and cumin).
- Gofio: flour made from toasted grain. Escaldón is gofio worked into a broth.
- Queso asado: grilled cheese with mojo.
- Conejo en salmorejo: rabbit marinated in garlic, paprika and wine.
- Puchero canario, the islands' meat and vegetable stew.
- Sancocho: salt fish with potatoes and sweet potato.

If you fancy mixing volcano and wine, there's a buggy tour on Teide with a tasting and tapas; the driving requirements are in quad biking and buggies. For a relaxed afternoon as a couple, a late tasting in El Sauzal (Wednesday to Saturday, until 20:00) fits with what we suggest in Tenerife for couples.
