If you'd like to see the seabed without getting wet or knowing how to dive, the submarine is the most unusual option on the island and the only "boat" trip that doesn't move with the waves. If it's dolphins and whales you're after, it isn't for you: the dive is over a seabed with wrecks off San Miguel, and whales and dolphins aren't part of the route. That's what the catamarans with underwater windows are for: they don't go down, but they do go out looking for pilot whales.

Submarine or "underwater vision": not the same thing
This is the most common mix-up when booking. Several excursions use "submarine" or "underwater vision" in their names, but only one actually goes underwater.
| Submarine Safaris | Royal Delfin | Nashira Uno | "Vision Submarine" catamaran | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | submarine | catamaran with underwater windows | catamaran with underwater viewing | glass-bottom catamaran |
| Dives | yes, 25–30 m | no | no | no |
| Port | Amarilla Marina | Puerto Colón, pontoon 12 | Los Gigantes | Los Cristianos |
| Looks for whales and dolphins | no | yes | yes | yes |
| Duration | 50 min underwater | 2 h | 2–3 h | 1.5–2 h |
| Direct price | €57.95 | €33 | ask | €25 (online) |
The three catamarans are whale-watching trips with an extra for looking below the surface, not a visit to the seabed. To compare ports and whale-watching trips, see whale and dolphin watching.
What the dive is like
The submarine was built in Finland, is 18.5 m long and weighs 106 tonnes. It carries 44 seated passengers facing 22 side windows of 80 cm, plus two 1.6 m domes at either end. It runs on electric motors and is accompanied by a control boat on the surface.
The normal dive is to 25–30 m, although it's certified to go down to 60 m. Inside, the pressure is the same as at the surface, so you feel nothing in your ears. Divers swim alongside the windows and the route passes wrecks where you may see rays, barracudas or octopuses; as always at sea, the wildlife isn't guaranteed. At the end you're given a dive certificate. There's an audio guide in 15 languages.
The company describes itself as "the only real submarine in Tenerife" and says that, between this island and Lanzarote, where it has another, it has made more than 52,000 dives.

Two adults save about €6 by buying on the official website.
The child band is generous: the child rate applies from 2 right up to 14. There's no published residents' rate.
How to get to Amarilla Marina
Amarilla Marina (formerly Marina San Miguel) is in the Amarilla Golf development, in San Miguel de Abona, about 10 minutes from Tenerife South airport.
- The company's free coach: every day from Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, Playa Paraíso and Callao Salvaje; once a week from Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes. Confirm the day and the stop when you book.
- From the north: the day trip leaves from Puerto de la Cruz, dives at 11:00, gives you two hours free in Playa de las Américas and returns at 15:00.
- By bus: TITSA lines 470 and 483 call at Costa San Miguel (Golf del Sur).
There are cafés at the marina: use them before you board, because you can't eat or drink inside.
Who can and can't go
- Reduced mobility: you get in down two short vertical ladders through the hatch and have to climb down unaided. Wheelchairs and mobility scooters aren't allowed. There are alternatives in accessible Tenerife.
- Pregnancy and ear problems: the company says it's safe, because the cabin is kept at atmospheric pressure.
- Seasickness: the submarine travels beneath the waves and, according to the company itself, doesn't roll. If you get seasick on boats, it's the safest way out to sea.
- Enclosed spaces: if they make you anxious, bear in mind it's 44 passengers in a hull 4 m wide, for about 50 minutes.
With children aged 2 and over it works well: it's short and it doesn't move. More ideas in Tenerife with kids.
Practical tips
- Days it runs: six days a week, and all seven in the summer holidays. Departure times only appear in the booking calendar.
- Best booked online, direct: you save 5% and can cancel free of charge up to 24 h before.
- Don't confuse it with diving: if you're looking for scuba diving in Tenerife, what you want is a try-dive; it's on our diving in Tenerife page. To see turtles without a tank, see snorkelling with turtles.
- Combine it: the dive lasts an hour, so leave time for the rest of the day. The other sea trips in the south are under boat trips.

More about the company, its control boat and how it operates in our Submarine Safaris review.
Is there a tourist submarine in Tenerife?
Yes: Submarine Safaris, which describes itself as the only real submarine on the island. It leaves from Amarilla Marina (formerly Marina San Miguel, in San Miguel de Abona) and dives to 25–30 m for about 50 minutes with 44 passengers.
How much does the Tenerife submarine cost?
On the official website, €57.95 per adult and €35.15 per child aged 2 to 14 when you book online; the standard price is €61 and €37. From the north, with a coach from Puerto de la Cruz, €70.30 and €42.75 online.
Is the Royal Delfin a submarine?
No. It's a surface catamaran with 16 panoramic underwater windows that leaves from Puerto Colón to look for whales and dolphins. It doesn't dive.
Can babies go on the Tenerife submarine?
No. Children under 2 can't board under any circumstances. From 2 up to 14 the child rate applies.
Can you see whales from the submarine?
No. The dive covers a seabed with wrecks off San Miguel, where you may see rays, barracudas or octopuses. To see whales and dolphins you need a whale-watching boat trip.
Is the submarine suitable if I get seasick or have ear problems?
Yes. It travels beneath the waves without rolling and the cabin is at surface pressure, so the company considers it safe for pregnant women and people with ear problems too.
