La Gomera day trip from Tenerife: ferry or guided tour

From Los Cristianos to San Sebastián de La Gomera is about 50 minutes by ferry. If you're not taking a car, the guided day trip from €110 with ferry, coach, guide and lunch works out better than going on your own: the ferry ticket alone costs almost €80.

La Gomera is the island you see at sunset from the beaches on Tenerife's west and south-west coasts. The ferry leaves from the port of Los Cristianos and reaches San Sebastián, La Gomera's capital, in about 50 minutes with either company.

The maths is simple. A return as a foot passenger costs at least €79.48 with Fred. Olsen or €84 with Baleària, on the cheapest date. For €26–31 more, a €110 tour adds a coach around the island, a guide and lunch. Without a car on La Gomera, the tour wins. Going on your own only pays off if you're staying in San Sebastián or crossing with your own car.

Our picks

1

The classic with lunch

From the south, 9 h with ferry and lunch; the most-reviewed day trip, and the same price as on Tiqets.

If you're crossing on your own

A 5-hour tour of the best of Garajonay in a small group; match the meeting point to your ferry time.

The ferry from Tenerife to La Gomera: the two companies

Two companies run the Los Cristianos – San Sebastián de La Gomera route, and both take about 50 minutes. The second has changed its name: what many people still search for as Naviera Armas is now Baleària Canarias. Baleària bought Armas Trasmediterránea's Canary Islands routes, with the approval of Spain's competition authority (CNMC), and took control in May. For a while you'll still see the Armas name on some ships, but tickets are sold on baleariacanarias.com.

Fred. Olsen Express Baleària Canarias
Website fredolsen.es baleariacanarias.com
Ships trimaran Benchijigua Express and catamaran Bencomo Express Volcán de Tirajana (daily) and Pepita Castellví (Monday to Saturday)
Departures up to 5 a day daily
Crossing about 50 min about 50 min
One way, non-resident from €39.74 from €42
One way, Canary Islands resident from €9.93 from €11
Foot passenger boarding up to 1 h before closes 20 min before (40 min with a vehicle)

Both prices are "from" fares: the ferry companies price by demand, and peak days cost more. Exact times only appear in each company's booking search, so check both for your date; which is cheaper changes from day to day.

A few more things worth knowing about Fred. Olsen: it offers discounts of up to 25% for under-26s and over-60s, changes are free, pets are allowed, there's free wifi on board and luggage trolleys for €1. If you're staying in Santa Cruz, its free bus to the port of Los Cristianos has to be booked together with your ticket. You'll find the full comparison of the two companies in ferries in Tenerife.

What a La Gomera day trip includes

To give you an idea of what's included: the one sold by Civitatis, for example, lasts 9 hours and includes the return ferry, a coach around La Gomera, a guide (Spanish, English, French or German) and a traditional lunch, with pick-up between 07:15 and 08:30 in Los Cristianos, Las Américas and La Caleta, and other areas in the south on request.

The usual route:

  • Garajonay, with a stop at the Laguna Grande.
  • Roque de Agando.
  • Hermigua and Agulo.
  • Mirador de Vallehermoso.
  • San Sebastián: the Torre del Conde and the places linked to Columbus.

The pricier formats swap the coach for groups of 18 people at most (from €149), 4x4s (from €150) or a VIP tour (from €165). If you're staying in Puerto de la Cruz there's a jeep trip from there, but the day stretches to about 13 hours.

Adult prices checked on 2 October 2026. They can change with the date; each platform confirms the final price.

The classic day trip costs the same on both platforms: €110. The difference is in the small print. On GetYourGuide the general rule is free cancellation up to 24 h before (check the listing), and the listing has more than two thousand reviews with a score of 4.1, decent but not brilliant. On Tiqets the listing has far fewer reviews and the cancellation policy depends on the provider: read the cancellation section before you pay. At the same price, we'd go for the 24-hour cancellation.

Go on your own if San Sebastián is enough for you, if you want to spend the night on La Gomera or if you're crossing with your car (ask for the vehicle price when you book: there's no discount). If you're staying in Los Cristianos, you can walk to the port from most hotels. For everything else, the tour does in one day what would cost you more money and a good deal more organising on your own.

What to see on La Gomera in a day

Garajonay National Park is the main reason for the trip. It has been a national park since 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, covers about 40 km², and its highest point, the Alto de Garajonay, stands at 1,487 m. It's laurel forest (laurisilva), the same type of forest you'll see in Anaga; in August 2012 a fire burnt about 747 hectares, close to 18% of the park. Entry is free.

Silbo gomero is a whistled language that UNESCO inscribed in 2009 as Intangible Cultural Heritage. It has been taught in the island's schools since 1999: two whistles replace the five vowels and four stand in for the consonants.

San Sebastián is a short walk from the port. If you're going on your own without a car, it's the part you can see on foot, with the Torre del Conde and the spots linked to Columbus. To carry on along the coast, Fred. Olsen runs a boat service San Sebastián – Playa Santiago – Valle Gran Rey.

The waters off western Tenerife and La Gomera form the Tenerife–La Gomera Whale Heritage Area, an accreditation from the World Cetacean Alliance; if you're keen on whales and dolphins, the trip to take is a dedicated boat (see whale watching).

Other ferries from Tenerife

If you're after another island, it's worth knowing which port each route leaves from:

Destination Company Leaves from Crossing Price
Gran Canaria (Agaete) Fred. Olsen Santa Cruz 80 min, then a bus to Las Palmas check
Gran Canaria (Las Palmas) Baleària Santa Cruz 1 h 40, up to 6 a day from €62
La Palma Fred. Olsen Los Cristianos 2 h 30, up to 2 a day check
La Palma Baleària Los Cristianos 2 h 30, daily from €55
El Hierro both Los Cristianos 2 h 20, daily check

For Gran Canaria, choose by where you're going rather than by crossing time: Fred. Olsen drops you in Agaete and Baleària in the centre of Las Palmas. More details in ferries and, if you're taking the bus to the port, in Los Cristianos.

Practical tips

  • Even if it's hot in Los Cristianos, take a jacket: Garajonay is damp forest up to almost 1,500 m.
  • On your own, with Baleària you can turn up to board on foot as late as 20 minutes before; Fred. Olsen asks for an hour.
  • Check both companies on the same day before you buy: one company's "from" fare can be dearer than the other's highest.
  • If you get seasick, take your usual remedy before boarding; it's 50 minutes of open sea.
  • If you'd rather stay on Tenerife, the full-day alternative is an island tour.
How long is the ferry from Tenerife to La Gomera?

About 50 minutes from Los Cristianos to San Sebastián de La Gomera, with both Fred. Olsen Express and Baleària Canarias.

How much is the ferry to La Gomera?

For non-residents, from €39.74 each way with Fred. Olsen and from €42 with Baleària; return, from €79.48 or €84. Prices go up on busy days.

Does Naviera Armas still exist?

Not as a brand in the Canary Islands: Baleària bought Armas Trasmediterránea's routes and operates as Baleària Canarias. For a while the Armas name remains on some ships, but tickets are bought on baleariacanarias.com.

Is an organised day trip to La Gomera worth it?

If you don't have a car, yes. For about €26–31 more than the ferry alone, the €110 tour includes coach, guide and lunch, and takes you to Garajonay, Hermigua and Agulo, which you can't see in a day without a vehicle.

Do you have to pay to enter Garajonay?

No. Entry to Garajonay National Park is free and you don't need a permit.
