Tenerife for couples: sunsets, stars, boat trips and spas

The best things to do in Tenerife as a couple are free or close to it: watching the sun go down behind La Gomera from the west coast and heading up Teide to see the stars. For a treat, there's an adults-only catamaran, a private sunset boat or an afternoon in a thermal spa.

Tenerife offers a couple two things that few islands can manage on the same day: a sunset over the sea with La Gomera silhouetted on the horizon and, two hours later, a sky protected by law for astronomy. Everything else (boats, spas, dinners) is easy to book. The hard part is choosing the right base: the hustle of Las Américas isn't what most couples are after.

Our suggestion: stay in La Caleta or Playa San Juan if you want a beach and some peace, or in Garachico or La Orotava if you'd rather have a proper town. Book a sunset by boat or on Teide, and leave one day free for a beach on the west coast.

Our picks

1

Sunset and stars on Teide

Flagged as GetYourGuide's best-selling guided tour on the island: sunset above the sea of clouds and telescopes, with pick-up.

2

Adults-only boat

White Tenerife's shared catamaran from Puerto Colón, maximum 12 people, with a glass floor and a hydrophone.

3

Sunset catamaran

Three hours with snacks and drinks; check the listing for which areas the pick-up covers.

4

The highest sunset

The cable car at sunset up to 3,555 m, a picnic and telescopes: you watch the sun go down from the top, not from the base.

5

An afternoon at the spa

Aqua Club Termal, which bills itself as the island's biggest spa; go in the afternoon, when there are no children.

Where to watch the sunset in Tenerife

The sun sets in the west and south-west, facing La Gomera. The three best beaches to watch it from, according to the island's tourist board:

  • Abama (Guía de Isora): a bay of pale sand below a luxury hotel. It's a public beach: you park at the hotel and walk down for about ten minutes. One of you can drop the other off with the bags at the bottom first.
  • La Arena (Puerto de Santiago): black sand and calm water, with La Gomera straight ahead.
  • Los Gigantes: the cliffs glowing at the end of the day, with sunset boats from the marina.

If you're staying in the north, the alternative is Benijo, in Anaga: it doesn't face La Gomera but the Roques de Anaga, which stand out against the sky as the sun goes down. Two warnings: Santa Cruz council closed the beach by decree because of the unstable hillside, so check on tenerifeon.es whether you can get down to it yet; and the last bus from Almáciga leaves at 20:35 on weekdays.

Canary Islands local time (the same as the UK, one hour behind mainland Spain), calculated for the south coast in the middle of each month.

By boat, there are two styles. The three-hour sunset catamaran includes snacks and drinks. Travelin' Lady's sunset trip from Los Cristianos lasts an hour and a half, costs less and combines the sunset with whale watching: book it here. More options in sunset cruises.

Stargazing on Teide

Teide National Park is a Starlight Tourist Destination and the island's summits are a Starlight Reserve; on top of that, a law protects the quality of the sky for the observatories. The usual trips pick you up mid-afternoon, watch the sunset above the clouds, stop for dinner and spend 60 to 90 minutes at the telescope. You're back around midnight.

Stargazing costs €35 on GetYourGuide, Tiqets and Headout, the same starting price as the one-hour session Volcano Teide sells on its website for people arriving in their own car. Choose wherever the cancellation terms suit you best. Apart from Teide By Night, which has a child fare, none of them take under-8s, so these tend to be adult evenings.

Two details that matter. Check the moon before you book: at full moon the Milky Way almost disappears.

When is the new moon?

Tonight—— illuminated

Next new moons

The best nights for stargazing are the five days either side of the new moon.

And wrap up: at night, above 2,300 m, it's cold even in summer. Volcano Teide requires long trousers, long sleeves and closed shoes on its cable car trip. All the details are in stargazing.

On a boat, just the two of you (or nearly)

White Tenerife's adults-only catamaran leaves from Puerto Colón (pontoon 6): three hours, maximum 12 passengers, a glass floor and a hydrophone for listening to the whales and dolphins. It's shared, not private, but having no children on board changes the atmosphere.

If you want the boat to yourselves, a two-hour private VIP sunset trip starts from €350 per boat, and a three-hour private boat with tapas and drinks from €450 for up to 7 people. In Los Gigantes, Third Element's sailing boat Mugen does a private sunset trip for €650. All the options in private boat charter.

Adult prices checked on 2 October 2026. They can change with the date; each platform confirms the final price.

Aqua Club Termal (Torviscas Alto, Costa Adeje) is an independent spa with a Turkish bath, sauna, saltwater flotation pool, jacuzzis and a hydromassage pool. On its website it costs €47 for 3 hours; the platforms sell it from €40, but that price may be for a shorter circuit, so compare the length before you pay. Children are only allowed in the mornings (Monday to Friday until 14:00): on a weekday afternoon you'll have more peace. The full-price ticket includes a towel; the discounted ones don't.

    Other options, depending on budget:

    • Spa Sensations, Iberostar Anthelia (Fañabé): a 2-hour circuit for €29 for non-residents; with breakfast, €38. It's the cheapest hotel circuit for non-residents that we know of.
    • Oriental Spa Garden, Hotel Botánico (Puerto de la Cruz): over-16s only, with an indoor and outdoor circuit in a garden. For non-residents it's sold with a massage, from €120.
    • Sandára Wellness & Spa, at Abama: massages from €130, booked by phone.

    More in spa and wellness.

Quiet villages and areas to stay

The tourist board picks out La Caleta, the old fishing village at the far end of Costa Adeje; Playa San Juan, in Guía de Isora; and the historic centres of Garachico and La Orotava as quiet places to stay. The first two give you a beach and the sunset; the last two, cobbled streets, more cloud and fewer beach crowds. More in other towns in Tenerife.

For a night out without the madness of Las Verónicas, try The Patch area, the venues at Playa de Troya (Papagayo, and Monkey Beach Club with its Cielo terrace, open Tuesday to Saturday) or Calle de La Noria in Santa Cruz. We cover it in nightlife.

Wine, bananas and an adventure for two

In the north, Santa Úrsula is guachinche country: a real guachinche opens for four months a year at most, serves no more than three cooked dishes and only its own wine. In El Sauzal, Bodegas Monje runs a guided tour with tasting from €14. In the south, Finca Las Margaritas, in Las Galletas, shows you round a banana plantation with a tasting from €10. More in food and wine.

If you're after an adrenaline rush, a paragliding flight with a national champion starts from €130 per person. A two-seater buggy up to Teide is priced per vehicle, not per person, so as a couple it works out much better than two quads; bear in mind the route always sticks to tarmac roads. We explain it in buggy and quad.

On the west and south-west coast: Abama, Playa de La Arena and Los Gigantes, with La Gomera on the horizon. In the north, Benijo has sunsets facing the Roques de Anaga.

How much does stargazing on Teide cost?

From €35 per person for a one-hour session if you have your own car, €89 for the trip with dinner and transfer, and €159 for the one that goes up by cable car at sunset. Apart from Teide By Night, none take under-8s.

Can you go up the Teide cable car if you're pregnant?

Yes. White Tenerife runs a shared adults-only catamaran from Puerto Colón, lasting three hours with a maximum of 12 people.

What's the cheapest spa in Tenerife for non-residents?
