Adeje: Scenic Tenerife Helicopter Flight

The 7 minutes for €110 is a taster: you see the coast of Adeje, Las Américas and Los Cristianos and land again. The first flight that really gets beyond the hotel zone is Los Gigantes, 18 minutes for €295, with the cliffs and views of Teide. The long Teide route circles the national park rather than crossing it. And book late, with the weather forecast in hand, because cancelling costs you half the price even a month ahead.

Our picks

1

The helicopter flight

Sightseeing flight from Adeje of 7 to 40 minutes, with the same durations and starting price as Helidream; rated 4.8 from more than 350 reviews. Check which cancellation terms the listing applies.

2

More time in the air for less

A 25-minute paratrike flight in the mountains: it isn't a helicopter, but it's 25 minutes of flying from about €130, against 7 minutes for €110.

3

If what you want is to fly over the coast

Tandem paragliding from Costa Adeje with pick-up, rated 5.0: you land on the beach for a fraction of the price.

Who flies and where from

The sightseeing flights are sold by Helidream (Helidream Canarias, S.L.); flight operations run under Bigas Grup Helicopters' air operator certificate. Its website is helidreamhelicopters.com; helidream.com is a parked domain that's up for sale.

It flies Monday to Sunday from the Adeje heliport, at Calle Charfa 2 on the Las Torres industrial estate. The aircraft is a single-turbine Bell 206 JetRanger with a pilot and 4 passengers, or 3 depending on which helicopter is in service that day, and it carries an emergency flotation system. You'll find the full company profile in our Helidream review.

Do you fly over Teide?

Not at low altitude. The Teide National Park management plan (Plan Rector) restricts flights over the park, so the Gran Teide route follows its edge, through the areas "close to the Corona Forestal", and doesn't pass over Las Cañadas. You'll see the 3,715 m volcano from the air and from outside the park, but you don't fly over the top. If the mountain is what interests you, go up by cable car: it's all in our Teide guide.

If the weather isn't on your side, Helidream changes the route "respecting the minutes and kilometres booked".

Shared or private

By default the flight is shared: you may fly with strangers. To fly on your own you have to buy all 4 seats. For a couple that means, for example, 4 × €159 = €636 for the 10 minutes of route 2.

The company doesn't publish how many passengers a shared flight needs to go ahead. It does warn that it may call you to change the time, so leave some slack that day.

Booking and cancellation: the small print

Helidream's direct terms are tough:

  • If you cancel more than 48 hours ahead, you're charged 50%.
  • If you cancel within 48 hours or don't turn up, you pay 100%.
  • If Helidream cancels for weather or a technical problem, it offers you another date, an equivalent route or a refund.

That's why it pays to book late, once you can see the forecast. If you book on a platform, check the cancellation terms on the listing: GetYourGuide refunds you up to 24 hours ahead unless the activity says otherwise, which would be far better than the direct terms.

What to bring and requirements

  • ID: passport (or a Spanish DNI or NIE if you have one).
  • Confirmation: reconfirm your flight 24–48 hours before.
  • Weight: if you weigh more than 110 kg (about 17 st 5 lb) you also have to book the seat next to you, charged at 50%.
  • Children: the company doesn't publish a minimum age or say whether babies can fly on a lap. Ask when you book.

Helidream phone numbers: bookings +34 630 315 422; office +34 922 711 487, 09:30 to 15:00.

Getting there. The Las Torres industrial estate is next to the Adeje exit on the TF-1 motorway. The practical way is by car or taxi; if you'd rather take the guagua (the local bus), look up the nearest stop on titsa.com.

Who it's for

Yes: celebrations, couples who want something special (more ideas in Tenerife for couples) and anyone wanting to see the cliffs of Los Gigantes or the north-west in a short time.

No: if you want a long view for little money, or if your plans might change at the last minute. Paragliding gives you 15–45 minutes in the air for €100–150, and to see Los Gigantes from the water a boat trip costs much less.
