The Complejo Turístico Costa Martiánez, which everyone calls Lago Martiánez, is a complex of seawater pools on the seafront of Puerto de la Cruz, with creative and artistic design by César Manrique. It's owned by the town and run by PAMARSA, the council's public company.

My advice: if you're in the north and want a swim without waves, this is the place. Arrive having eaten or ready to buy lunch, because you can't bring your own food in, or leave and come back on the same ticket. And don't look for tickets online: they aren't sold there.

Current status: open, with some areas under works

There's no general closure. The complex reopened in full after the biggest refurbishment in its history, welcomed 4,000 more visitors in July than a year earlier, and in August opened a new Terraza Mirador (viewing terrace).

What there are, though, are partial restrictions. In April the council announced 3,150 new sunbeds, a tender for 2,300 parasols, the restoration of the hydromassage pool and the closure of one area of the lake because of sea erosion. As of today there's no official notice that the hydromassage pool and the cordoned-off area have reopened, so ask at the ticket office before paying if you're coming specifically for the jacuzzi.

What's inside

According to Tenerife Tourism, the complex has an artificial lake holding 27,000 m³ of seawater, four adult pools and three children's pools. It all covers about 100,000 m², with islands, bars and restaurants between the pools.

  • The Lake: the big expanse of water with islands, and the only pool with a ramp and an amphibious chair for people with reduced mobility.
  • Three children's pools: which make it the easiest place in town to swim with small children.
  • Jacuzzi: over-18s only, €2 extra.
  • Bars and restaurants: where you'll be eating, because outside food isn't allowed in.

The whole site is smoke-free, except for the restaurant areas.

Prices and opening hours

The complex has no official website with prices. These rates are the ones published by an unofficial guide, which attributes them to the municipal pricing by-law published in the provincial Official Gazette (Boletín Oficial de la Provincia): treat them as a guide and confirm at the ticket office.

Ticket Price
Adult (over 10) €7
Child (4 to 10) €4
Parasol €3
Jacuzzi (over-18s only) €2
15-entry pass adult / child €80 / €50
30-entry pass adult / child €133 / €90
Puerto de la Cruz resident: adult / child / pensioner €3 / €2 / €2

The sunbed is included. The table gives no price for under-4s: ask. The resident rate is for people registered as living in Puerto de la Cruz who hold the town card, not for any Canary Islands resident, so as a visitor you pay the standard rate. Tickets are sold only at the ticket office, are valid for a single entry (if you leave, you pay again) and aren't refundable.

Opening hours: 10:00 to 18:00 for most of the year and 10:00 to 19:00 from 1 July to 30 September, according to the same unofficial guide.

César Manrique and the story of the lake

The first phase opened in 1971 and the lake was finished in 1977, with Manrique in charge of the creative and artistic design. It solved a problem that's still there: Martiánez beach, next door, is black sand and pebbles, and Tenerife Tourism describes it as usually rough, with a surfing area.

Manrique also designed Playa Jardín, next to Loro Parque, but since 30 September its Playa Grande section has been closed to swimming after an unfavourable health authority test, until new tests give the all-clear. Right now, the town's reliable swim is at Martiánez.

The complex faces Paseo de Colón, right on the town's seafront. By car, the nearest car park is at the Pirámides de Martiánez shopping centre, about 7 minutes' walk away, for €1.49 an hour; there's free parking on the open ground by the harbour, about 15 minutes on foot.

Without a car: from Tenerife North airport, bus 30 reaches Puerto de la Cruz in about 30 minutes for €4.75. From Tenerife South airport, the direct 343 runs only four times a day, so it makes more sense to fit it into a trip to the north. To combine it with Loro Parque, the park's free little train leaves from Plaza de los Reyes Católicos, in the same town; bus 381 costs €1.45.
