Loro Parque is Tenerife's big zoo and a full day out, with orca, dolphin, sea lion and parrot shows, a penguin house and an aquarium. The price is the same on the official website and on the platforms; what changes is the cancellation policy and, if you're staying in the south, how you sort out the journey.

My advice: if you're staying in Costa Adeje, Las Américas or Los Cristianos, get a ticket with transfer included, or a ticket plus the official bus, which cost the same. If you're also going to Siam Park, get the Twin Ticket. And before you go, read the section on the orca debate: some people would rather know before they pay.

Our picks

1

If you're staying in the south

Ticket and transfer from the south for the same money as the ticket (€44) plus the official bus (€21) bought separately.

2

Just the ticket, with leeway

€44, as at the gate, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before and pay later.

3

If you're also doing Siam Park

Twin Ticket for €78: €10 less per adult and €7 less per child; count on 14 days to use both visits.

4

To keep your wallet in your pocket

All Inclusive: admission, guided tour, VIP seats and unlimited food and soft drinks in the park's restaurants.

What is Loro Parque?

Wolfgang Kiessling founded it in 1972 with 150 parrots on 13,000 m². Today the park talks of more than 400 species and 52 million visitors since it opened, and it's the parent company of Siam Park. It's open every day of the year from 09:30 to 17:30.

As well as the show stadiums, there's Planet Penguin (with real snow), Katandra Treetops, Oceanía, La Gruta (the bat cave), the aquarium, Aquaviva and Kinderlandia, the children's area with the Orca Train. The park doesn't sell any kind of animal encounter.

The €44 is the same on the official website, GetYourGuide, Tiqets and Headout. The difference is what happens if your plans change: GetYourGuide offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before and lets you pay later, Headout up to 48 hours before, also with pay later, and Tiqets sells it non-refundable with no date changes. At the same price, the 24-hour cancellation gives you the most breathing room.

The Twin Ticket costs €78 everywhere. The "-7%" Tiqets shows against €84 is window dressing: €78 is the official price. On GetYourGuide you can cancel up to 24 hours before; on Tiqets you can't. Remember that at the first park you're given a wristband you must keep on until you've used the second, and that GetYourGuide quotes 14 days' validity against the 15 on the official website.

This Loro Parque and Siam Park combo with transfer costs €99 on both platforms, exactly the Twin Ticket (€78) plus one official bus trip (€21). Before paying, check in the listing which park or parks the transfer covers and which area it picks up from. The Tiqets version still has very few reviews.

The park's official bus. It leaves from the tourist areas in the south and from Los Gigantes, arrives from 10:00 and heads back at 16:30. It costs €21 adult and €17 child, return. Stops and pick-up times are in the PDFs on the park's visit page, and you can confirm them on +34 922 797 573 (09:00–20:00).

Ticket with transfer. The GetYourGuide combo costs the same as a ticket and official bus bought separately, with the advantage of paying for everything at once in a single booking.

By car. Allow more than an hour from Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos. Parking costs €7 and can't be booked.

By public bus (the "guagua"). TITSA line 110 from Costa Adeje to Santa Cruz and line 102 from Santa Cruz to Puerto de la Cruz; from Los Gigantes, the 325 goes direct to Puerto de la Cruz in 1 hr 45 min (five a day on weekdays). It's the cheapest way and the longest: only worth it if you're already in the north or staying the night there.

Within Puerto de la Cruz, a free little train runs to the park from Plaza de los Reyes Católicos, next to McDonald's, every 20 minutes. According to the park's timetable, the first one to Loro Parque leaves at 09:30 and the last at 16:30; coming back, from 10:15 to 17:30. The FAQ page says "from 9:00", so if you're going early don't count on that half hour. Bus 381 also links the centre with the park for €1.45. If you're staying in the north, see our Puerto de la Cruz guide.

Show times

Each show lasts about 20 minutes. These are the times published by the park; check them on the day of your visit on the official website.

Show Times
Sea lions 09:45, 10:45, 13:45, 14:45
Parrots 10:25, 12:30, 14:30, 15:30, 16:45
Dolphins 11:00, 13:00, 16:15
Orcas 11:55, 15:15

What to see and in what order

There are only two orca shows and three dolphin shows, so plan your day around them and fill the gaps with the enclosures. This route works if you arrive around 10:00 on the bus from the south:

  1. 10:25 · Parrots: the first show you can catch as soon as you're in.
  2. 11:00 · Dolphins: the morning show.
  3. 11:55 · Orcas: the first of the day's two shows; if you miss it, there's only the 15:15 left.
  4. Lunch: the restaurants open from 11:00 to 16:30 and the kiosks all day. You can also bring your own food: there are picnic areas.
  5. 13:45 or 14:45 · Sea lions, with Planet Penguin, Katandra Treetops and La Gruta in between.
  6. 15:15 · Orcas if you want a second look, or the aquarium and Aquaviva. The bus to the south leaves at 16:30.

If you have small children, set aside some time for Kinderlandia and the Orca Train. If you get there under your own steam first thing, you can start with the 09:45 sea lions. More ideas for travelling with little ones in Tenerife with kids.

The orcas and the animal welfare debate

The orca shows are still running, twice a day, with four animals: Morgan, Tekoa, Adán and Teno, Morgan's calf. In recent years Skyla, Ula, Kohana and Keto have died, and keepers haven't gone into the water with the orcas since Keto killed trainer Alexis Martínez in 2009. The park also has eight dolphins.

The critics: Thomas Cook stopped selling the park because of its orcas and other British operators don't sell it either; World Animal Protection criticises Teno appearing in shows at four months old, and Whale and Dolphin Conservation the fact that Morgan, an orca rescued in the Netherlands, performs. The park responds with an audit commissioned by Thomas Cook itself that gave it 100% compliance with ABTA's welfare standards, and with American Humane certification, and argues that training provides exercise and mental stimulation through behaviours the animals show in the wild. TUI still sells tickets.

With that information, it's your call. If you'd rather see whales and dolphins in the wild, short-finned pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins live off the south coast all year round, and you can see them on a whale-watching trip. And if what you want is a zoo, Jungle Park, in Arona, has no whales or dolphins.

Rules and practical tips

  • Food: you can bring your own, unlike at Siam Park.
  • Leaving and coming back: allowed on the same day with a hand stamp from the ticket office.
  • Not allowed: pets (only guide or assistance dogs, with a day's notice and up-to-date vaccinations), scooters, roller skates and bikes, feeding the animals, and professional photography equipment without permission.
  • Refunds: none, but the park's tickets don't expire.

We look at how the group works as a business, with its track record and certifications, in Loro Parque official.
