Helidream sells helicopter tours in Tenerife with a website, routes and published prices, and as things stand it flies daily, but there are three things worth knowing before you pay: who operates the flight, which part of Teide you see and how much money you're risking if your plans change. If you came looking for helidream.com, that domain isn't theirs: it's parked and up for sale. The real website is helidreamhelicopters.com.

Who sells and who flies

The company that takes your money is Helidream Canarias, S.L. (tax ID B76577402), with tourism registration code TA-4-70-ES-0000028 and intermediary code I-0002757.2. Its registered office is in Adeje and its base is Adeje Heliport, at calle Charfa 2 on the Las Torres industrial estate (Polígono Industrial Las Torres), next to the Adeje exit of the TF-1.

The flight is operated by a different company: the website states that air operations run under air operator certificate ES.AOC.136 held by Bigas Grup Helicopters, S.L.U. In other words, Helidream markets the flights and the air operator certificate belongs to Bigas Grup. The aircraft is a single-engine Bell 206 JetRanger, with a pilot and 3 or 4 seats depending on which helicopter is flying that day, and an emergency flotation system.

Two details undermine the website's credibility. The legal notice still contains placeholder template text ("COMPLETAR ANTES DE PUBLICAR", or "complete before publishing") where the companies register entry should be, and the Teide page dates the UNESCO listing to 1997, when it was 2007. It doesn't affect the flight, but it says little for the company's attention to paperwork.

Routes and prices

Route Minutes Price per person What you fly over
1 Southern Coasts 7 €110 El Puertito de Armeñime, La Caleta, Puerto Colón, Las Américas, Los Cristianos
2 Beaches and Ravines 10 €159 the above plus Montaña de Guaza, Roque del Conde, Ifonche and Barranco del Infierno
3 Los Gigantes 18 €295 Playa San Juan, Alcalá, the Los Gigantes cliffs, Tamaimo, views of Teide
4 Isla Baja 25 €430 Santiago del Teide, Buenavista, Garachico, Chinyero and back over the Corona Forestal
5 Gran Teide 40 €545 the edge of the national park, the Orotava valley, Puerto de la Cruz, Vilaflor
Private 60 €2,400 (up to 4) tailor-made

There's also a 10-minute private flight to the Finca 3 Roques restaurant in Ifonche for €1,400 for four, and transfers to other islands: La Gomera €1,900, Gran Canaria, La Palma or El Hierro €2,695, Fuerteventura €5,390 and Lanzarote €6,050, always for four at most.

The 7 minutes of route 1 are a taster: you don't leave the hotel coastline. The 18-minute Los Gigantes route is the first where the scenery really changes. And the Teide route circles the national park over the Corona Forestal pine belt rather than flying over the caldera: the park's management plan doesn't allow low flying over it.

Flights are shared by default. If you want the cabin to yourselves, you pay for all four seats: on the 10-minute route, 4 × €159 = €636. The website doesn't say how many passengers are needed for a shared flight to go.

Booking and cancellation: the part you need to read

You book on the website; bookings are handled on +34 630 315 422 and the office is on +34 922 711 487 (09:30–15:00). Bring your passport or ID card and reconfirm 24–48 hours beforehand, because the company may call you to change the time.

The general terms and conditions are very tough:

  • If you cancel more than 48 hours ahead, you're charged 50%.
  • Within 48 hours, or if you don't turn up, 100%.
  • If Helidream cancels because of the weather or a technical problem, it offers another date, an equivalent route or a refund.
  • In bad weather they can change the route while keeping to the minutes and kilometres you booked.

On the platforms

GetYourGuide has a scenic helicopter flight from Adeje, from 7 to 40 minutes, starting at €110 and rated 4.8 from more than 350 reviews. The starting price matches route 1. Before you pay, check the supplier's name on the listing and, above all, its cancellation policy: compare it with the direct one, which penalises you from day one.

The good

  • Flies every day from a heliport in the south.
  • Clear routes and prices, from 7 to 40 minutes.
  • Named air operator and a helicopter with floats.
  • Private options and transfers to other islands.

The not so good

  • You lose half your money if you cancel, whenever you do it.
  • The 7- and 10-minute routes are expensive for what you see.
  • Teide is circled, not flown over.
  • No published minimum ages or minimum passenger numbers.

Who should book and who shouldn't

Book if your date is fixed, the forecast is good and you can stretch to at least the Los Gigantes route: seeing the cliffs from the air is what justifies the price. As the penalty is the same with a month's notice as with three days', book late, once you know the weather. Don't book if your trip might change, if you're after a flight "over the crater" or if you expect to see the island in 7 minutes.

Alternatives

All the practical information is in helicopter tours. To fly for longer for much less money, paragliding takes off a few minutes away, and Happy Fly's meeting point is on the same street as the heliport (compare them in paragliding companies). You can also see the cliffs from the water on a boat trip from Los Gigantes, and the volcano close up on a Teide trip. And you can reach La Gomera by ferry from Los Cristianos too, in about 50 minutes.

What is Helidream's website?

helidreamhelicopters.com. The domain helidream.com doesn't belong to the company: it's parked and up for sale.

Who operates Helidream's flights?

Helidream Canarias, S.L. sells the flights, and air operations run under air operator certificate ES.AOC.136 held by Bigas Grup Helicopters. It flies a Bell 206 JetRanger with emergency flotation.

How much does a Helidream helicopter tour cost?

Per person on a shared flight, from €110 for 7 minutes to €545 for 40 minutes around Teide. A private hour for up to four costs €2,400.

What happens if I cancel a Helidream flight?

Booking on its website, you're charged 50% if you cancel more than 48 hours ahead and 100% if you cancel later or don't turn up. If the company cancels because of the weather or a technical problem, it offers another date, an equivalent route or a refund.

Does Helidream fly over the Teide crater?

No. The 40-minute Gran Teide route circles the national park over the Corona Forestal, because the management plan doesn't allow low flying over it.
