"Hiring a sailing boat in Tenerife" ends up meaning either a shared trip on a small yacht or a private skippered charter. Tenerife Sailing Charters does the first well in Costa Adeje, with food and drink included; for the second, Los Gigantes has more dramatic scenery and published prices. Going out with no skipper and no licence is no longer possible.

Our picks

1

Shared sailing in Costa Adeje

Tenerife Sailing Charters: 3 h on the Pecazul, a swim with snorkelling, sandwiches and unlimited drinks.

2

Small sailing boat in Los Gigantes

Third Element: 10 at most, beneath the cliffs, with cava and a light lunch.

3

Adults only, shared

White Tenerife: a catamaran for 12 adults in Puerto Colón, with a glass floor and a hydrophone.

4

Private with tapas

A 3-hour private boat with tapas and drinks; the listing shows the operator and the harbour.

Who Tenerife Sailing Charters are

It's a small business in Puerto Colón (Costa Adeje). Its website, tenerifesailingcharters.com, names an individual as the person responsible, with no limited company in sight. You meet at the top of the quay, next to the "Pantalán Nº4" sign, 15 minutes before departure. The fleet:

  • Pecazul, a 40-foot sailing yacht for up to 11 passengers, listed on the Canary Islands whale-watching boat register (CT-38-4-0000121).
  • No Worries, a motorboat for up to 10.
  • A parasailing boat.

They offer "larger yachts on request", without naming them. They say they fly the yellow Blue Boat (Barco Azul) flag, the one for boats authorised to look for whales and dolphins. They haven't signed Turismo de Tenerife's Sustainability Charter.

What it sells and what it costs

The flagship product is a shared 3-hour trip with hotel pick-up, a swim and snorkelling (gear included), baguettes, fruit, snacks and unlimited drinks including cava. They mention the "chance of seeing turtles", without promising them.

  • Direct: €65 per person, €55 for under-10s. You pay a deposit from €25 and the rest on board.
  • On GetYourGuide: from €65, rated 4.5 from more than 3,000 reviews, with the "Certified by GetYourGuide" badge.

The price is the same; the payment differs. Book direct and you pay little upfront and the rest on board; on the platform, it's on their terms. They advertise 6-hour private charters with no published price, and their cancellation terms aren't clear either: get both in writing before you pay the deposit.

The private skippered alternatives

Private charters with details published by the companies themselves:

Company and harbour Boat Places Price
Third Element, Los Gigantes Mugen sailing yacht, 14 m 10 3 h €650; 6 h €1,100; extra hour €150; sunset €650
Bonadea – Diomedea, Puerto Colón (pontoon 4) 7 m inflatable 6 2 h, price on request
White Tenerife, Puerto Colón (pontoon 6) tailor-made skippered boat — on request
Neptuno Whale Experience, Los Cristianos yacht up to 22 private option on the listing
Flipper Uno, Los Gigantes wooden sailing ship up to 91 on request
Freebird, Puerto Colón large catamarans private events on request

Third Element is the benchmark: €650 for 3 hours for 10 works out at €65 a head with a full boat, less than its €75 shared fare. It includes drinks, tapas-style food, mask and snorkel; not towels, sun cream or seasickness tablets. Changes and cancellations need 24 hours' notice.

The platforms also list private charters from other operators from €350 for 2 hours or €450 for 3. More options in private boat hire in Tenerife.

Hiring without a skipper: a licence is now compulsory

To hire without a skipper you need a valid leisure boating qualification adequate for that boat, issued by your country of nationality or residence, provided it's in the European Economic Area or a country listed in annex IX of RD 875/2014; a professional STCW certificate also counts. With a qualification from anywhere else, check that annex before you pay. The Tenerife Harbour Master's (Capitanía Marítima) notice is published by Puerto Colón.

Skippered trips and charters are unaffected, and jet skis on a circuit or guided safari follow their own rules.

The good

  • A small group on a sailing yacht from Costa Adeje.
  • Pick-up, food, drinks and snorkelling included.
  • Small deposit and the rest paid on board if you book direct.

The not so good

  • Not suitable if you get seasick easily.
  • No published fares for private trips.
  • Unclear direct cancellation terms: ask for them in writing.

Who it suits and who it doesn't

Book Tenerife Sailing Charters if you're staying in Costa Adeje or Playa de las Américas and want a sailing boat with few people, food and a swim without paying for a whole boat; for couples or friends, it's good value for what you get.

Look elsewhere if you get seasick, if you want a private trip at a fixed price (Third Element) or if you're after a sunset: see sunset cruises and Tenerife for couples. For Los Gigantes, see Los Gigantes boat trips.
