Submarine Safaris Tenerife review: the island's submarine

Submarine Safaris runs Tenerife's tourist submarine, which it bills as the only real one on the island: 50 minutes at 25–30 m from Amarilla Marina. It works well and it's cheaper on its own website than on the platforms, but it isn't a dolphin-watching trip.

Submarine Safaris delivers what it promises, with a genuine submarine rather than a catamaran with windows. Book on its website: you save 5% and can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours beforehand. What it can't offer is guaranteed big wildlife, or access for anyone who can't manage a ladder.

Who Submarine Safaris are

Submarine Safaris SL has two submarines: the Sub Fun Cinco at Amarilla Marina (San Miguel de Abona, about 10 minutes from Tenerife South airport) and the Sub Fun Tres at Puerto Calero, Lanzarote. The company bills itself as "the only real submarine in Tenerife" and says it has made more than 52,000 dives across the two islands.

The Tenerife boat was built in Finland. It's 18.5 m long and 4 m wide, weighs 106 tonnes and carries 44 passengers in front of 22 side windows and two domes. It's electric and followed by a support boat on the surface. It's certified to 60 m, but the normal dive goes to 25 to 30 m.

It isn't a whale-watching boat, so it doesn't need the Blue Boat (Barco Azul) flag. Website: submarinesafaris.com.

What it sells and what it costs

The booking site shows two prices: the "normal" one and an online price 5% lower.

Product Adult online Child online (2–14) Normal price
Dive from the south €57.95 €35.15 €61 / €37
Day trip from the north (bus from Puerto de la Cruz) €70.30 €42.75 €74 / €45

Children under 2 aren't allowed on board "under any circumstances" (they can ride the bus and watch). The child fare covers ages 2 to 14, an unusually generous band. There's no Canary Islands resident fare.

The free bus runs daily from Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, Playa Paraíso and Callao Salvaje, and just one day a week from Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes. For large groups, or to hire the whole submarine, email the office.

Adult prices checked on 2 October 2026. They can change with the date; each platform confirms the final price.

GetYourGuide, Tiqets and Headout sell the same dive at the normal price, €61; the official website brings it down to €57.95. That's €3.05 per adult, more than €12 for a group of four. A platform is worth it if you want all your bookings in one app or if its listing beats the official site's 24-hour cancellation: check. On ratings, the GetYourGuide dive sits at around 4.8 from some 2,600 reviews; the Tiqets one at 4.3 from 58.

How booking and the day work

You can book up to 4 hours ahead and cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before. It runs six days a week (seven in the summer holidays); times only appear in the booking calendar. Including boarding, the trip takes around an hour. There's an audio guide in 15 languages and a dive certificate at the end.

The good news: the cabin stays at surface pressure, so the company considers it suitable for pregnant women and people with ear problems, and, according to the company, there's no rocking below the waves. What we don't know: the company gives no guidance on claustrophobia; that's 44 people in a hull 4 m wide.

What you'll actually see

Divers swim alongside the windows and the route passes wrecks where rays, barracudas or octopuses may turn up. No animal is guaranteed, and whales and dolphins aren't part of the route. If dolphins are what you want, the right trip is a whale-watching boat.

The good

  • The only way to get down to 25–30 m without diving.
  • No rocking, according to the company: a good option if you get seasick.
  • Free bus from the main southern resorts.
  • Cheaper, with free cancellation, on the official website.

The not so good

  • No guaranteed wildlife and no whales or dolphins.
  • No under-2s, without exception.
  • Vertical ladders: not suitable if you have reduced mobility.
  • The bus only calls at Los Gigantes one day a week.

Who it suits and who it doesn't

Book it if you're travelling with children aged 2 to 14, if you get seasick on boats or if you want something different from the usual catamaran trip. Skip it if you've got a baby with you, if someone in your group can't climb a vertical ladder or if seeing whales is your priority.
