If you search for a "pirate ship" in Los Cristianos, this is the best known: a Portuguese-style wooden schooner that takes 60 passengers for 2 hours around the pilot whale area and finishes with a swim. It has more of a sailing-ship atmosphere than Travelin' Lady and less entertainment than the Ragnarok. The weak point is the company: there's little public information.

Who runs it

The boat belongs to Neptuno Whale Experience, which also runs the Neptuno yacht in Los Cristianos and has a third boat, the Shogun, in Puerto Colón. The Peter Pan and the Neptuno are on the Canary Islands Government's official register of whale-watching boats, based in Los Cristianos: the licence is in order.

What you won't find is an official operator website with rates and terms, or a published company name, so you'll be booking through a platform or a reseller. Nor is it on Tenerife Tourism's voluntary Sustainability Charter.

The boat and the trip

The schooner has two toilets, a bar, a central table, an indoor saloon for about 15 people and an upper deck for sunbathing. It's a boat with atmosphere and room to move around.

The trip lasts 2 hours from the harbour's Excursions Area, with boarding at 09:45, 11:45, 12:45 or 13:45 depending on the option. At the end, at the captain's discretion, there's a 15 to 20-minute swim. Water is included, in reusable cups; other drinks cost extra.

  • Not suitable for wheelchair users.
  • Seasickness: the listing itself warns that the sea is sometimes choppy. If you're prone to it, bring your own remedy.
  • Getting there: follow the blue line painted on the harbour ground to the green fence of the Excursions Area. There's a pay car park nearby, but in high season it tends to be full. Everything about the harbour is in whale watching from Los Cristianos.

Price: platform versus reseller

On GetYourGuide the Peter Pan is from €27.81. The listing title no longer says "pirate": it appears as a whale-watching trip with a swim from Los Cristianos. Local resellers sell it at €27 per adult, €15 per child aged 2 to 11 and free for under-2s, with hotel pick-up for €5 extra.

The difference is minimal, so the terms decide it. On GetYourGuide the general rule is free cancellation up to 24 hours beforehand, with the booking in the app; with a reseller, ask for the cancellation policy in writing. Other "pirate ships" are advertised from Los Cristianos: if you want this one, check that the listing says Peter Pan.

Cancellation, bad weather and sightings

The terms are those of whichever channel you buy through. With GetYourGuide, free cancellation up to 24 hours beforehand; if the operator calls it off because of the sea, ask about another date or a refund.

On the whales and dolphins, the operator is upfront: sightings can never be guaranteed, as the other serious operators also acknowledge. Pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins live all year round a few kilometres from this harbour.

What the ratings say

On GetYourGuide it's rated 4.7 out of 5 from more than 4,000 reviews, the same score as Travelin' Lady and higher than the "Eco No-Chase". That's a very solid rating for a 60-seat boat. What you might not like: drinks other than water cost extra, the swim depends on the sea and the captain, and with 60 passengers it isn't a quiet trip.

The good

  • Wooden schooner with atmosphere and space on board.
  • A 15 to 20-minute swim at the end.
  • A short-trip price for 2 hours at sea.
  • Several morning and midday departures.

The not so good

  • Only water is included.
  • No official website in sight with rates or terms.
  • 60 people: it isn't an intimate trip.
  • Not suitable for wheelchairs.

Who it's for and who it isn't

Book it if you want more than an express trip without giving up half a day: groups of friends, families with children who can swim and anyone after a photo on a wooden boat. More ideas for couples or groups in boat trips.

Look elsewhere if you get seasick easily (the Mar de Ons catamaran is advertised as stable; who's who with Bonadea), if you want the most direct route (Travelin' Lady) or if you're with young children who'd rather have swords than whales (Ragnarok). From Los Gigantes, the Flipper Uno pirate sailing ship offers a similar idea with cliffs.
